Dr. Sukovich joined the Histotripsy Lab at the University of Michigan in 2013 after receiving his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Boston University where he studied high energy cavitation collapse phenomena. Dr. Sukovich’s work on histotripsy has been focused on developing histotripsy for use in brain applications including as a treatment option for intracerebral hemorrhage, hydrocephalus, and brain tumors. He has also led the development of advanced histotripsy treatment controllers and related technologies to ensure safe and efficacious treatments can be delivered to patients. This has included work on transmit-receive histotripsy systems which allow users to non-invasively monitor generated cavitation in real-time to detect its position and ensure that it is accurately generated in only the targeted tissue(s), as well as to actively monitor the level of therapy-induced damage generated by it to ensure complete destruction of the targeted tissues is always achieved. In collaboration with the Histotripsy Team’s clinical partners, he has also worked extensively on developing the tools and workflows needed to integrate histotripsy systems with external medical devices and workflows to help smooth histotripsy’s adoption into the clinic as its role in medicine expands.
